Fun and learning for children with haemophilia

Archery was just one of the activities the children could try

The Haemophilia Society received funding from Jeans for Genes to hold an activity weekend for 20 children.

Haemophilia is an inherited bleeding disorder which stops the blood clotting properly.

Children who are affected can have serious bruising, wounds that are slow to heal and painful bleeding into their joints, muscles or internal organs.

So you can understand why children can be reluctant to play in case they cause a bleeding episode.

Fun in safety

The weekend took place at Barton Hall activity centre in Torquay in Devon.  It was a chance for the youngsters to try activities such as kayaking, climbing, arching and quad biking.  Being active is very positive for their health, as well as being fun.

Three nurses were on hand so that the children could enjoy themselves in a safe and fun environment.

Learning independence

Some children need to inject clotting factor, depending on the severity of their bleeding disorder.  The weekend was a chance for them to practise doing the treatment themselves and to learn more about their condition.

As well as support from the nursing staff, they could talk to volunteer youth leaders who know what it's like living with a bleeding disorder.

“Thank you very much to everyone who made this opportunity for my daughter possible.  She has benefited a great deal and she will never forget it.”
Making new friends

Having a rare condition can make youngsters feel very different and isolated.  This weekend allowed the children to meet others just like them.  By the end of the holiday, the majority of them had exchanged email addresses.

Families have seen a difference in their children as a result of the camp.  Many of them said they're more confident and independent.

“Thank you for taking my son on the holiday.  He seems to have had a great time.  It is so helpful for him to spend time with other children with bleeding disorders in a non-hospital environment.”
