Keeping Ieuan MOVE-ing

Christa and Ieuan take a walk in the sensory garden

Ieuan is 18 years old and has Rett syndrome.

It's a degenerative neurological condition which affects his ability to learn, his movement, posture and skills such as eating.

But Christa, a MOVE Practitioner at Mapledown Special School in north London is helping him to maintain the skills he has, thanks to Jeans for Genes.

Christa attended a MOVE workshop which your donations funded.  For just £2,200 she and 24 other people were trained in the MOVE Programme.

The programme is a combination of family knowledge, education and therapy that helps children to achieve their goals.  These could be anything from lifting their head up by themselves to look at the world around them to dancing at the end of term disco.

"MOVE showed me just how much you can achieve with a child," says Christa.  "I can incorporate the programme throughout the day so the children spend less time out of class doing physiotherapy."

"It's amazing what this programme has done for my confidence and the confidence of the children I'm working with."Christa, MOVE Practitioner

Thanks to the work of MOVE Practitioners like Christa, Ieuan is still able to do many of the things that he could several years ago.  He's more positive and able to concentrate better in school.

His parents can carry on with the programme when he gets home.  Without it he would probably be using a wheelchair full time.

Conchita Garcia from MOVE says their ultimate aim is to see children across the country benefiting from the MOVE programme.

"We're about to launch MOVE in Derbyshire for everyone from the age of 0-65 which is very exciting," she says.  "Jeans for Genes has shown how a small amount of money can make a huge difference and everybody who raised money on Jeans for Genes Day should be really proud of themselves."
