Coping with a newly diagnosed deaf child
Finding out your child is deaf can be a shocking and upsetting experience. It raises all sorts of questions, not least of all, “how are we going to communicate?”
At least 50% of childhood deafness has genetic causes and 90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents.
As a benefiting charity in 2007, the National Deaf Children’s Society received funding to hold a series of family weekends for parents who’ve recently learned that their son or daughter has a hearing loss.
These weekends take place across the country and are a chance for families to get reassurance, practical information, talk to young deaf people about their lives and meet other families in similar situations.
Parents at the NDCS family weekend in Leicestershire said “I think that NDCS do an extremely good job for the parents of deaf children and we both thank you from the bottom of our hearts for such a great weekend."
