Winners of The Genies announced

A school which achieved a silver Genie in 2008 has struck gold in the latest awards.

Meadow Vale Primary School in Bracknell, Berkshire, won gold in the primary school category for their efforts on Jeans for Genes Day 2009.

A Year 5 class performed an assembly which considered the cause behind Jeans for Genes Day.

The pupils also looked at how they got their genes and what makes each of them unique.

Gaynor Dalrymple, PSHCE subject leader at Meadow Vale Primary School, said:

“We also decided to hold a cake sale which contributed an extra £208.75 to our total of £629.68.

"The children feel a real sense of achievement from the Day and we’re delighted that our efforts have been acknowledged by Jeans for Genes.”

Secondary school gold

Hurworth School in Darlington, County Durham, won the Gold Genie Award for a secondary school.

Year 10 pupils who'd just completed the “You and Your Genes” module for their GCSEs, organised awareness-raising assemblies and activities on the Day.

Nichola Peaker, Assistant Headteacher and Head of Science said:

“We’re so excited to have won this award.  I’m delighted with the pupils’ fundraising efforts and feel that the whole event really raised awareness about the issues associated with genetic disorders as well as bringing the school together in a really fun and exciting day!”

Runners-up

The 6th Form College, Farnborough were awarded the silver award in 2009.  The students normally wear jeans to college so they decided to hold a pyjama party on the Day.

The Student Association also put together a presentation, using many of the free educational resources available from Jeans for Genes.

Matt Davenport, the Charities Officer for the 6th Form’s Student Association, said:

“It's a great honour for us to be recognised in this way.  The students here are always enthusiastic and generous, which is reflected in the £1300 we raised.

"We're also very proud of the awareness we've raised amongst the students about the fantastic work that Jeans for Genes does.”
